The Technology Behind Modern Public Warehousing

Public warehousing is part of a larger supply chain

Technology has changed everything…the way we communicate, the way we do business and even the way we entertain ourselves. Our lives are filled with smart phones, computer tablets and a near constant bombardment of information. Just think, only five years ago cell phones were much more primitive – normal functions included making calls, sending texts and a simple camera. Now you can do anything with a phone!

I know what you’re thinking. I’m here to read about public warehousing, why so much about technology and computers? Well, there is a great reason for that. Public warehousing has seen technology improve efficiency exponentially and redefined a warehouse’s place within the supply chain.

With technology, public warehousing lives well beyond the brick and mortar walls which had previously defined its perceived reach. In a sense, modern warehousing is now an efficient cog in the larger supply chain. Everything is tracked for optimal performance among retailers, business partners and manufacturers.

So, what does that mean for you? And how do you know if your 3PL public warehousing partner is using the right technology?

To answer that question, let’s begin with why any company would outsource public warehousing. From our experience at Clark Logistic Services, most customers want to utilize our technology and space, without a major investment. This offers them a huge long-term cost savings. Make sense?

As a retailer or manufacturer, knowing if your public warehousing partner has the right technology is a bit more difficult. You probably don’t know much about the software used by your 3PL, but you should know what you want. For example, I know automated processes are important to expedite tasks and quickly adjust for supply changes. If my public warehousing partner does not use much automation, I can assume that they will not have the responsiveness that I need. Hence reducing the likelihood they will be able to keep deadlines and maintain quality control across the supply chain.

On the most basic level your public warehousing moves inventory, and on the high level they manage your supply chain. Demands are always increasing on your bottom line and your public warehousing partner should be able to react. If you have any questions about warehousing, please ask us! Remember, you will never move forward without innovation…filling out the form below is your first step.
